Declutter Your House

Declutter Your House

A clean house prompts good health of the family members. Cluttered houses often add to poor health due to the wastes of the house. If you want to make your house manageable, then you should first declutter it first.  Periodic decluttering of your home will make life much easier and more manageable for everyone in the family.

Daily Decluttering

The following is a list of household work that you need to do everyday:

1. Cleaning utensils: Sinks full of utensils left unwashed may add odors, stains, and fungal growth. Cleaning dishes as and when you use them reduces your daily work.
2. Washing and Laundry:  Most everyone needs laundry everyday. Daily load of laundry can be reduced if it is planned everyday as and when it comes up.
3. Filling papers and files: Filing papers and files on regular basis can prevent them from getting piled up. It also helps from accumulating trash.

Weekly Decluttering

The following are chores that can be performed weekly to declutter your home:

1. Vacuuming cleaning:  Vacuuming can take some time, but it accomplishes a large job. All the nooks and corners where you cannot reach can easily be cleaned dust-free.
2.  Dusting carpets and other fabrics: Fabrics like carpets, rugs, stair mats and furniture fabrics should be dusted once a week. It is sufficient to stay clean throughout the week.

Monthly Decluttering

Few things in the house are rarely used or accessed in the house, these items and areas may be decluttered monthly.

1. Clean lights and light fixtures: Same as the ceiling fan, light fixtures need monthly cleaning. Dust is normally accumulates on the hood of the light fixtures. It also prevents from dulling the light.
2. Dust air vents: This is a very important place that needs regular cleaning because the air that you inhale comes through and goes out from these vents.

Yearly Decluttering

3. If you plan the decluttering of the house on regular basis, then there won’t be much left at the end of the year. There is only one thing left to do – clean the walls. Cleaning the walls will cover the final cleaning touches of your house.

Finished Basements

Finished Basements

Many home builders forget about the benefits of including a basement when they plan to add a new living space. Current surveys and studies show that finished basements rank behind kitchen and bathroom renovations. However, homes with finished basements have a higher prospective resale value and offer the homeowner many advantages when compared to homes without a basement.

Advantages of Finished Basements

There are many advantages of finished basements. The first being because the earth naturally insulates basements, therefore, they are cool in summer and warm in winter. However, if the winter is harsh you can always install a heating system with a separate thermostat. A second advantage is you can have your home office, expanded kitchen or an additional guest room in the basement. You can even have a large master bedroom in the basement thus freeing the main living area. A final advantage is the house will be quiet and stress free if the basement is converted into a playroom, home entertainment center, exercise room or other activity room. You can also use the basement as a den or sauna or whirlpool bath area, where you can quietly retreat from other household activity.

Finished Basement Problems and Solution

One of the major problems faced by homeowners with a basement is moisture and dampness. Therefore before beginning any work, check for moisture or resolve the existing moisture problem immediately.  The moisture will contribute to humid air, mildew and other factors that will always give the area a basement despite the amount you spend on designs and interior decorations. The basement will not be a comfortable environment if the air is humid in the basement living space. Seal the small cracks in the foundation wall because they can allow the penetration of moisture. Condensation of moisture on the walls has to be prevented or removed. To prevent condensation of moisture increase ventilation, cover the exposed water pipes and installation of wall insulation can prevent the humid air from coming into contact with the damp concrete walls.  Finally, the basement should be waterproofed to avoid the water seepage.

Hiring a Finished Basement Contractor

It’s important to hire a competent basement finishing firm or a contractor. When you are dealing with the professional, inquire whether they are the licensed and have insured operators. It is also a good idea to inquire how many years of experience they have in doing basement jobs. You should also ask if they will take care of the building permit, or if that’s your responsibility. Always ask for an estimate and find out their work schedule. Notice if they are adaptable to changes and modification, and whether they can provide assistance and recommend useful ideas. Finally, ask for a list of recent references.

Marble Counter Tops

Marble Counter Tops

Most homeowners want to coordinate their kitchen counter top to the decor and color theme of the kitchen.  In addition, they are seeking an aesthetic appeal as well as cost, and would like to get a durable surface with suitable edges, that are easy to use and clean with a smooth surface.  It should be heat resistant, water resistant, chemical resistant, will not scratch, stain, chip or crack, and last but not least, is easily repaired.

Advantages and Disadvantages

If a homeowner wants a custom fit, but doesn’t want to take out a second mortgage on the home to finance the kitchen remodeling, marble tiles is the solution. Marble tiles are tough, heat resistant, attractive and unyielding to stains.  These surfaces can be fully customized using any variety of marble tiles and depending on what look is desired in the kitchen.

Marble is also aesthetically appealing and hygienic, but sometimes it is susceptible for stains and scratches.  It is not as hard as granite and therefore not as durable and does not react well with chemical cleaning agents.  Considering those disadvantages, marble still is the best option for a kitchen counter top.  The cost of marble is an investment, which more than pays off over time, and in terms of ease, convenience, cleanliness, low maintenance cost, durability and aesthetics it truly is the best option.

On the downside, the marble can often become stained and the counter may not be smooth. This can be a problem when trying to clean up messes and spills.  Darker marbles show stains less, so homeowners might want to factor this in when making a tiling decision.  Marble tile is on the high end of a tiled countertop. When professionally installed, these can also match the kitchen floor tile and look very modern and elegant. Tiling can be very inexpensive for the entire top depending on the contractor installing the tile, what materials are used and what look is desired, however, regardless of price this is a great combination for style in the kitchen.
