Once cabinets in the home are used, they quickly become full with dishes, food items, pots and pans, small appliances, cleaning supplies, and many other items. There never seems to be enough space to put everything, whether the kitchen is large and spacious or small and compact. Making space more efficient, especially in the kitchen, is one of the most important needs in today’s home planning.
Setting aside some time to rearrange the kitchen for timesaving efficiency is a great way to make house work easier. Start by removing everything from the kitchen cabinets and from the cupboard. Then sort them into three categories, according to where the items are used.
Sort Kitchen Items According to Need
Raw food items, baking spices and food preparation items such as mixing bowls and measuring cups should be stored near the refrigerator where they will first be used. Dishes, silverware and clean-up tools go next to the sink so for easy access. Pots and pans, cooking spices and other cooking utensils should be placed within easy reach of the range.
Place each group near where that operation takes place such as the sink, range or baking center – putting daily used items at the front of the shelves. Those things that are used a few times a month should be stored above, below or behind everyday items in the kitchen as well as in the living area. Those items used only occasionally should be stored somewhere other than in the kitchen, possibly the garage or utility room.
Keep small appliances handy but out of site
By rearranging hand appliances and space, poorly organized kitchens are a challenge to even the best storage specialists. Create an appliance center on a countertop, preferably in a corner. Storage in a kitchen is truly a challenge, but once it has been organized and the equipment and supplies are in order, time and energy will be saved and food preparation and clean up is much more enjoyable.
In organizing your kitchen, keep in mind these three basic principles: storage at center of use, clear visibility of all supplies, and easy accessibility of the desired item
